Going back a ways our phone at home was a tall thing that had a hook attached to it for what was called a receiver. And there were five other families on our line. There was always one person on the line that listened to everyone's conversation. Every once in a while she would ask a question like "Did you get a C in Math"? So you knew she had been listening to one of your calls.
Â
I am amazed with the phones today.  My Daughter Joann has two phones with her at all times.  I suppose Becky has a business phone and a personal phone. James has a phone that takes pictures and sends messages. Veronica has a phone that takes the place of a map. She calls for directions to certain places in town. Bill has a phone that attaches to his belt. Me, I have a portable phone that rings when someone calls me and it serves me well.Â
Â
Too bad we did not have phones like those today in the 60s and 70s. My Husband was in the Tree business and had an older Gentlemen named Jim working for him. Fred had a bucket truck and one day he was trimming a very tall tree high up in the bucket, about 10 blocks from our home, right on the water.
He finished the trimming and was ready for Jim to bring him down with the controls on the side of the truck. Only one problem Jim had fallen asleep propped up against a tree (I might mention Jim was very hard of hearing).Â
Â
Well, I was hanging up clothes in the back yard of our home when I heard my Husband's voice calling "Jim."  Now you might doubt that I could hear a voice calling from that distance but believe me I did. So, after four or five yellings for Jim I got into my car and drove over there, woke Jim and he brought the boss down.Â
Â
It was in the heat of the Florida summer and neither of the two men said a word. I took Jim home and Fred went home and cooled off under the hose. Â
Â
The next morning Fred took the Bucket Truck into the shop to have the controls put on the inside of the Bucket so he could come and go as he needed to and Jim Could take a nap while Fred trimmed.
Love and prayers from here to there.
